10/15/2005

  • Box Score

Kristi Troster scored two goals in the Retrievers' loss to Albany.

Albany, N.Y.-Junior attack Kristi Troster (Lansdale, Pa./North Penn) scored twice for the Retrievers, but it was not enough, as the UMBC field hockey team (2-10, 0-3 AE) fell to America East Conference foe Albany (6-8, 1-2 AE), 5-3, Saturday afternoon at Alumni Turf Field.

Meg Rinier started the scoring for Albany when she tapped in a pass from Vanessa Walter at the 12:20 mark. The Retrievers tied the game at 1-1 just before halftime when junior midfielder Julie Moore (Rising Sun, Md./Rising Sun) converted a penalty corner from senior midfielder Amanda Heinz (Wilton, Conn./Wilton) at 32:13 for her fourth goal of the year.

The Great Danes responded quickly after halftime, as Rinier’s penalty corner set up a goal by Michele Polizois at 37:08. But the Retrievers again knotted the score on Troster’s first goal of the game at 43:38.

Albany took the lead for good less than four minutes later when Kristen Holder notched her seventh goal of the season, giving the Great Danes a 3-2 advantage. Albany struck again at 52:35 with what proved to be the game-winner when Kasey Weaver scored on a rebound of a shot by Holder.

UMBC did not go down without a fight, as Troster scored again, her sixth goal of the year, on a penalty corner from Heinz at 62:09 to cut the deficit to 4-3. Heinz’s two dishes on the day give her six on the season.

But Tina Bryson put the game away for good at 63:45 with an unassisted insurance goal to give the Great Danes a 5-3 lead.

Sophomore goalie Ashley Benitez (Sykesville, Md./Century) tallied four saves and allowed all five Albany goals, while Albany keeper Ashley Ross did not stop any UMBC shots.

The Great Danes out-shot the Retrievers, 23-8, and held an 11-4 advantage on penalty corners.

UMBC returns to action Sunday, Oct. 16, at non-conference opponent Cornell. Game time is 1 p.m.
