Ashly Meehan was named to the All-Rookie Team

Sophomore Julie Moore (Rising Sun, Md./Rising Sun) was named to the 2004 America East All-Conference Second Team, while freshman Ashly Meehan (Rising Sun, Md./Rising Sun) was named to the All-Rookie Team after voting was conducted among the league’s head coaches.

For the season, Moore led the Retrievers in goals (9) and points (21), and was ranked seventh in the conference in those categories. In addition, she finished seventh in the league in goals per game (0.53), ninth in points per game (1.24), and tenth in shots per game with 2.18.

Meehan finished the year with six goals and three assists, good enough to be third on the UMBC team in goals in scoring for 2004. On September 7, she received Rookie of the Week honors for her performance the week prior when she scored the first goal of her collegiate career, and assisted on another goal, as UMBC lost a heartbreaker during the season opener at Appalachian State in double overtime. During that same week, she netted two goals in just three shots as the Retrievers cruised to a 5-0 victory over Robert Morris.

The UMBC field hockey team ended the year with a 4-13 record, with seven losses coming by deficits of two or fewer goals. The Retrievers will graduate five seniors, all of whom were starters for the 2004 season.

The list includes Cecile Banas (Gaithersburg, Md./Wooton), an All-Northeast Conference selection in 2002, and an All-America East honoree in 2003. During her four-year tenure, she has started all 62 games, while anchoring the Retriever defense. This past year, she notched two goals and recorded two assists for UMBC. Another graduating senior is Leslie Chilcote (Hustontown, Pa./Forbes Road), who has played in 59 of a possible 62 games while at UMBC. During her junior year, she ranked third on the team in both goals and points, with four and 10, respectively, while this past year, she recorded a team-high five assists.

The Retrievers will also lose Meghan Polek (Hanover, Md./Seton Keough), who has been the Retrievers’ starting goalkeeper for the past three years. During her four-year career, she played in over 3,412 minutes, recording 339 saves, while allowing just 151 goals. The fourth senior, Kristin Ramsay (Rockville, Md./Our Lady of Good Counsel) ranked second on the team in both goals and points in 2004, with seven and 17, respectively. As a junior, she finished the season tied for the fourth spot in both goals and points despite playing in only seven games.  Lastly, the Retrievers will graduate Jen Rowe (Elkton, Md./Elkton), who has also played in all 62 possible games for the Retrievers during the last four years. Since her freshman year, she has been a driving force on the team, scoring the game-winner in the victory over Siena as a rookie. She capped her final season tied for second on the team in assists with three.
