Box Score
Baltimore, Md. – Freshman Katie Flynn’s goal off a penalty corner at 40:30 proved to be the game winner as Vermont (2-10, 1-1 America East) edged UMBC (4-9, 0-3 America East) by a score of 2-1 in a conference match-up this afternoon at the UMBC Stadium.
Vermont scored the first goal of the game during another corner when freshman Danielle Collins passed the ball inside to junior Emily Fitzgerald, who was able to shoot it past Retriever goalkeeper Meghan Polek (Hanover, Md./Seton Keough). The 1-0 Catamount lead would hold up until the break.
In the second half, Vermont would go up 2-0 on Flynn’s goal before UMBC could get on the board. The Retrievers would convert on their own corner opportunity when senior Cecile Banas (Gaithersburg, Md./Wooton) took a shot, which was saved by Vermont keeper Ariel Eber. However, sophomore Julie Moore (Rising Sun, Md./Rising Sun) was able to grab the rebound and score for her team-high seventh goal of the season.
UMBC had a few opportunities to tie late in the game, but could not capitalize. Their best chance came with less than eight minutes remaining when freshman Amy Morrow (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) received the ball on the right side and sent a centering pass, which senior Leslie Chilcote (Hustontown, Pa./Forbes Road) shot just wide of the net.
For the game, Vermont outshot UMBC, 13-11, and had more corner opportunities, 7-5. Eber made nine stops for the Catamounts, while Polek had eight saves on the day.
