GEORGETOWN UPENDS RETRIEVERS’ FIELD HOCKEY, 2-1

9/8/2004

Julie Moore scored her team-leading fourth goal of the season to pace UMBC.

Baltimore, Md. – The Georgetown Hoyas (1-3) defeated UMBC (2-3) in field hockey action on Wednesday evening at UMBC Stadium by a final score of 2-1.  Hoyas’ forward Lindsay Fisher scored back-to-back unassisted goals as the Hoyas held off the Retrievers, who out shot Georgetown 19-8 for the game, for the 2-1 victory.

The Retrievers dominated the first half, suffocating the Hoyas offense and holding Georgetown to no shots while the Retrievers rattled off eight in the first stanza.  Despite the advantage in the shots column, the Retrievers were unable to grab the advantage in the goals column as the team’s played to a 0-0 tie into the break.

After the half the Hoyas capitalized on their first scoring opportunity, sending the three shots at the Retriever in a minute span as Retriever goal minder Meghan Polek made back-to-back saves on two shots from Jen Kosoloski.  The second shot, however, rebounded off Polek’s pads to Fisher who placed the ball it the back of the Retriever cage to give the Hoyas the 1-0 lead 4:51 into the second half.

Fisher added her second goal of the game at the 28:29 mark into the second half as a free hit outside the circle bounced to Fisher who was able to get her stick on ball and put the Hoyas ahead 2-0.

The Retrievers less than two minutes cut the Georgetown lead in half as Leslie Chilcote shipped a pass to Julie Moore just inside the top of the circle.  Moore let loose on a shot that found the bottom right corner of the cage 30:15 into the second stanza.

The Retrievers pressured with a corner attempt that gave way to a shot by Kristi Troster, who’s shot sailed wide with under a minute to play as the Hoyas held on for the 2-1 win.

Moore scored her team-high fourth goal of the season and Chilcote her team-leading third assist.  Polek made three saves in the game.

Fisher finished with two goals and goalkeeper Abby Winer made eight saves to lead the Hoyas.

The Retrievers return to action when they travel to West Chester on Sunday, September 12, at 12 p.m.
