Radford, Va.Radford University field hockey received goals from four different players as they came from behind to defeat UMBC (0-2), 4-2,  in their season opener at Dedmon Center field this afternoon. The Highlanders (1-0) erased an early 2-1 second half deficit with three unanswered goals to earn their first season-opening victory since 2000.

The Highlanders wasted little time getting on the board on a goal from junior Hope Bates. UMBC tied the game at one when Julie Moore gathered a loose ball and scored from 10 yards out, the first of two goals for Moore.

Moore found the back of the cage 4:14 into the second half, giving the Retrievers a 2-1 lead. The advantage was short- lived when senior Jenny Bell scored on a penalty stroke just 49 second later. Four minutes after that, Evans scored the eventual game-winner from six yards out at 44:24.

Radford finished off the scoring at 52:14 when senior Marie Petran rifled home a feed from sophomore Allison Lussier to make the final margin, 4-2. UMBC had a few opportunities with three late penalty corners, but a save by junior keeper Amy Dietz and a defensive save from Feindt kept the Retrievers off the board the rest of the way.

The Highlanders outshot UMBC, 15-5 and had a 12-6 advantage in corners. Retriever keeper Meghan Polek stopped seven shots and back Tiffany Deinzer made two defensive saves. Dietz finished the game with two saves.

UMBC returns to action on Wednesday, September 1, when they host Towson at 5 p.m.
