UMBC CHOSEN SEVENTH IN AMERICA EAST FIELD HOCKEY COACHES’ POLL

8/19/2004

The UMBC field hockey team has been chosen to finish seventh in the America East this season, according to the Coaches’ Preseason Poll. The Retrievers, who finished with a 2-14 overall record, and 0-6 in the league in 2003, will return 10 starters from last season’s squad, and are expected to be an improved team.

This year, the Retrievers will be led by senior Cecile Banas (defense), junior Katie Cutchall (attack), and sophomores Julie Moore (midfield) and Kristi Troster (attack). Banas received All-Conference honors in 2003, while Cutchall led the team in scoring, and Moore and Troster were both named to the All-Rookie Team.

Three-time defending America East field hockey champion Northeastern University has been chosen to defend its title, as the Huskies received each of the possible six first-place votes, and 36 points overall. The University of New Hampshire followed with 29 points, edging out Boston University, who received 28 points. Maine came in fourth with 21 points, while Albany and Vermont were tied for fifth with 13 points. UMBC rounded out the list with seven points.

The top four teams in the conference will advance to the America East Championship with the winner of the tournament receiving an automatic bid to the NCAA Championship.
