FIELD HOCKEY DROPS HEARTBREAKER IN OVERTIME

Baltimore, MD-Kelly Monahan's goal just 1:35 into the first overtime sealed UMBC's fate as they fell 2-1 on a warm day at UMBC Stadium. Monmouth forced the extra session on a goal off a penalty corner with no time remaining in regulation.The Retrievers took the lead early in the second half as freshman forward Cecille Banas blasted a shot past Hawk goalie Lauren Strina at 20:22. Banas received a pass from sophomore forward Caitlin Galligan on the penalty corner.Monmouth (7-5, 6-3 NEC) would have several opportunities to even the score, including having a man advantage for five minutes after UMBC sophomore Alycia Downs was given a yellow card, but the Retriever defense remained stiff.With 0:06 remaining on the clock, however, the Hawks were awarded a penalty corner. UMBC (2-9, 2-7 NEC) would be whistled for another violation, this time with 0:00 showing on the clock and on the ensuing penalty corner play, Monmouth junior Megan Kenney found teammate Kristen Haberthur directly in front of the net for the tying score.In overtime, the Hawks' maintained the momentum and notched the game-winning tally just 1:35 into the extra period.
