Box Score
Baltimore, MD – Junior goalkeeper Meghan Polek (Hanover, Md./Seton Keough) stopped three of Appalachian State’s five penalty strokes to lead UMBC (2-11) to a 3-2 overtime victory over the Mountaineers, this evening at UMBC Stadium. The win over Appalachian State (9-7) snapped the Retrievers’ 11-game losing streak, which started on September 3.
UMBC got on the board early when junior Jen Rowe (Elkton, Md./Elkton) converted a pass from teammate Kristi Troster (Lansdale, Pa./North Penn) during a penalty corner at 8:52. However, the Retrievers’ lead was short-lived, as ASU’s Nara Brookes (Haddam, Conn./Haddam-Killingworth) responded with a goal in the tenth minute.
Appalachian State took the lead in the second period 40:29 when Carrie Johnson (Herndon, Va./Herndon) took a centering pass from Bridgette Burkhardt (Elkridge, Md./Long Reach) and shot it past Polek. UMBC once again converted a penalty corner in the 59th minute to tie the game, as sophomore Katie Cutchall (Hustontown, Pa./Forbes Road) sent the ball to freshman Julie Moore (Rising Sun, Md./Rising Sun). Moore then nudged it just inside the line for Troster, who netted the goal.
After two scoreless 15-minute overtime periods, junior Leslie Chilcote’s (Hustontown, Pa./Forbes Road) and Moore’s made penalty strokes were enough to give UMBC the advantage. Polek, who had previously allowed just one penalty stroke in her career, stopped three for UMBC, while allowing just one, by Brookes. Lindsay Roberts (Parkton, Md./Hereford), who shot fifth, had a chance to tie the strokes for ASU, but hit the post, thus giving UMBC the 3-2 win.
