UMBC FIELD HOCKEY UNABLE TO CAPITALIZE ON SCORING OPPORTUNITIES, FALL 4-0 TO BUCKNELL

  • Box Score

Baltimore, Md. - The UMBC Retrievers (1-6) lost to the Bucknell Bison (4-1) by a final score of 4-0 in field hockey action on Tuesday night at UMBC Stadium.  The Retrievers out shot the Bison, 13-12, but were unable to find the back of the net in the losing effort as a late first half goal and three insurance goals in the second half sealed the win for the Bison.

The Retrievers went right at the Bison as Catelyn Smith (Lemont, Pa./State College Area) and Katie Cutchall (Hustontown, Pa./Forbes Road) each sailed shots left of the net after the Retrievers received two early penalty corners in the first stanza.

After their initial offensive spurt, the Retrievers had to hold off a number of shots by the Bison throughout the first half.  The Bison after six shots finally got one by Retriever goal keeper Meghan Polek (Hanover, Md./Seton Keough) with 1:30 to play in the period to take a 1-0 advantage.  Bison freshman Callista Costopoulos recorded her first points of the year when she fed teammate Kelly O’Brien a pass in which O’Brien turned and rifled a shot passed Polek.

The Retrievers came out to the break looking to tie the game back up, taking 11 of their 13 shots in the second period.  Bison goaltender Liz Jordan kept the Retriever at bay, making three saves in the half and not allowing a goal.

The Bison added to their lead midway through the second half as Kate Ruda scored off a pass by Meiko Boynton and then Jenni Turner and teammate Kirsten Nilson took advantage of a penalty corner to make it a 3-0 game.  The Bison added one more when Boynton scored an unassisted goal with just under 11 minutes remaining in the game, taking the 4-0 victory.

The Retrievers return to action when they travel to Georgetown on September 27 for a 1 p.m. game.
