UMBC Baseball Falls, 9-4 to Maine in America East Tournament to End Season

Orono, Maine— UMBC baseball suffered a 9-4 defeat to Maine in an elimination game at the America East Tournament. Zack Bright (Fairfax Station, Va.) led the way with a pair of hits and two RBI.

UMBC ends their season at 22-29, while Maine improves 19-33 on the year.

Once again the Retrievers were the victims of a hot start by their opponent, with the Black Bears putting up four runs in the first and three in the second to take an early 7-0 lead.

UMBC answered in their half of the second with a run coming with two outs. Dalton Stewart (Sharpsburg, Md./Boonsboro) doubled down the right field line, and scored just pitches later on a Matt Campbell (Chesapeake, Va.) single. The made the deficit 7-2 the next inning. After loading the bases, Zack Bright scored on a wild pitch.

After the Black Bears got another run in the sixth, the Retrievers responded with a pair of runs. Bright singled home Mitchell Carroll (Oakton, Va.) and Stewart to cut the Maine lead to 8-4. However, the Black Bears added a run in the seventh and held on for a 9-4 victory on Wednesday.

Bright led the way with two hits, driving in a pair of runs. Joey Goodwin (Rockville, Md./Good Counsel) and Stewart also had two hits for UMBC. Bright earned All-Tourmament honors for his efforts in the tournament.
