UMBC Baseball Falls in Non-Conference Finale, 11-6 on Tuesday

Rockville, Md.— The Hoyas jumped out to an early lead and never looked back, holding off the Retrievers 11-6 on Tuesday. Chris Convers (Poolesville, Md./Poolesville) drove in a pair of runs to lead UMBC.

UMBC falls to 21-26 on the year while the Hoyas move to 25-26.

The Hoyas got out to an early lead, putting up a pair of runs in the second, one in the third and getting a two-run home run in the fifth to take a 5-0 lead after five.

UMBC answered back in the sixth, cutting the deficit to two. Convers led off the inning with a solo home run to left field on the first pitch he saw. Mitchell Carroll (Oakton, Va.) then reached on an error, and advanced on an AJ Wright (Cherry Hill, N.J.) double. Both would score the next at bat, as Christian Torres (Miami, Fla.) reached on an error to make it 5-3.

Georgetown got a run back in their half of the sixth to put them up 6-3.

The Retrievers added a run in the seventh on a Convers sacrifice fly that scored Dmitri Floyd (Dover, Del.) to make it 6-4 late.

However, the Hoyas pulled away from UMBC in the seventh with five runs to take an 11-4 lead. UMBC added a pair in the ninth with Joe Milkowski (Lackawanna, N.Y.) scoring on a wild pitch and Matt Campbell (Chesapeake, Va.) singling home Floyd to cut it to 11-6. Georgetown would get a double play to end the rally to seal the win.

Campbell led the way with a pair of hits with Convers driving in two.

UMBC closes out the regular season against Albany this Friday and Saturday. The two will play a double header on Friday with a single on Saturday, both days starting at noon. The Retrievers will honor their seniors on Saturday prior to the game.
