UMBC Baseball Hosts UMass Lowell in an America East Showdown This Weekend

Baltimore, Md.—UMBC baseball looks to continue their win streak with a key America East series against UMass Lowell this Friday and Saturday. The Retrievers have been off since they took two of three against Hartford last weekend.

What: UMBC Retrievers (11-16, 5-4 AE) vs. UMass Lowell River Hawks (19-14, 7-4 AE)

When: Friday (DH) and Saturday, April 21-22 – Friday at 3 p.m., Saturday at 2 p.m.

Game One: UML- Nick Kuzia (1-3, 4.83 ERA) vs. UMBC- Joe Vanderplas (3-3, 5.59 ERA)

Game Two: UML- Colin Duffley (5-2, 2.03 ERA) vs. UMBC- Matt Chanin (1-4, 5.23 ERA)  

Game Three: UML- Steve Xirinachs (2-3, 5.76 ERA) vs. UMBC- Mitchell Wilson (3-1, 6.94 ERA)

Scouting the Retrievers (11-16, 5-4 AE):

-UMBC comes into the weekend after having the week off after taking two of three from Hartford last weekend in Connecticut. UMBC dropped the opener 16-7 before taking games two and three by scores of 7-3 and 13-12.

-Hunter Dolshun (Warwick, N.Y./Warwick Valley) leads the offense with a .338 average, collecting 26 hits with six doubles and four home runs. He has driven in a team best 20 runs while scoring 18 himself. Jamie Switalski (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine-Richland) has blasted four homers while freshman Dalton Stewart (Sharpsburg, Md./Boonsboro) has three this year.

-Matt Chanin will lead the weekend rotation with a 5.23 ERA making 11 starts on the year. Joe Vanderplas (Fairfax, Va./Tennessee) and Mitchell Wilson (Hagerstown, Md./St. James) lead the team with three wins each. Jacob Christian (Nokesville, Va./Patriot) leads the staff with 33.0 innings pitched and 37 strikeouts.

Scouting the River Hawks (19-14, 7-4 AE):

-UMass Lowell heads to Charm City at 19-14, 7-4 AE in 2017 after splitting a mid-week matchup with Brown this week. The River Hawks most recently took two of three from Stony Brook in America East play last weekend.

-Chris Sharpe leads the offense in a number of categories including average (.338), hits (44), runs (35), triples (4) and home runs (7). He has driven in 25 runs, having played in every game. Colby Maiola leads the squad with 29 RBI.

-The River Hawks are led on the mound by Colin Duffley, who has won a team best five games with a 2.03 ERA. He has fanned 29 batters in 48.2 innings of work. Nick Kuzia and Steve Xirinachs will hit the mound for UMass Lowell this weekend. Kuzia has a 1-3 record in 31.2 innings pitched while Xirinachs is 2-3 in 25.0 innings.

Conference Recognition:

-Freshman Christian Torres (Miami, Fla./Miami Senior) was named America East Rookie of the Week this past week after a big weekend for the Retrievers against Hartford. Torres went 6-15 from the plate (.400 average) with four runs scored and two RBI.

All-Time Series:

-The Retrievers and River Hawks have met 12 times since the River Hawks joined the America East in 2013-14. UMBC holds a 7-5 lead, all in conference games.

-UMBC has won the last six meetings, all last year. The Retrievers swept the River Hawks in Baltimore in March before winning all three games in Lowell in May.

On Deck:

-UMBC will head to Georgetown for a mid-week matchup with the Hoyas on Tuesday, April 25 at 7 p.m. The Retrievers will then head to Albany for a three game set on Saturday and Sunday, April 29-30.
