  • Ten Retrievers to Represent UMBC in Summer Ball Leagues

    BALTIMORE – Ten Retriever baseball players will represent UMBC this summer in summer ball leagues. Three athletes will compete in the Cal Ripken Collegiate Baseball League (CRL), with two others playing locally in the Maryland Collegiate Baseball League (MCBL). The other five are split among clubs in the Coastal Plans League (CPL), Hamptons Collegiate Baseball League (HCL), and Valley Baseball League (VBL).

    CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – UMBC freshmen Andrew Casali and Hunter Dolshun have been selected to the 2014 America East All-Rookie Team, the conference office announced on Wednesday evening at the league’s annual awards banquet.

    ORONO, Maine – Starter Joe Vanderplas and sophomore Denis Mikush held Maine to just one run on six hits and senior D.J. Smith dumped an RBI single to right-center with two down in the top of the 12th to score junior Jake Barnes as the UMBC baseball team downed the host Blacks Bears, 2-1, in extra-innings, Sunday at Mahaney Diamond.

    ORONO, Maine – After Maine pounded out 21 hits in a 17-0 game one win, sophomore Mark Esposito launched his first career home run and freshman Andrew Casali hit an inside-the-park homer, but the Retrievers could not hold off the Black Bears who took game two, 8-4, to complete the doubleheader sweep, Friday at Mahaney Diamond in America East play.
  • Baseball Finishes 2014 Season with Trip to Conference Rival Maine

    BALTIMORE – After closing out the home schedule with an 8-5 win over Georgetown on Tuesday evening, the UMBC baseball team travels to America East rival Maine to close out the 2014 regular season. The Retrievers and Black Bears are set to play a doubleheader beginning at 4:00 p.m. on Friday at Mahaney Diamond, before closing the regular season with a single game on Saturday.

    BALTIMORE – Junior Jake Barnes collected his 100th and 101st career hits as the Retriever offense banged out nine hits and took advantage of eight walks and two Georgetown errors en route to an 8-5 win, Tuesday night at Alumni Field in UMBC’s home season finale.

    BALTIMORE – Coming off of back-to-back mid-week road wins, the UMBC baseball team returns to Alumni Field to open its final home stand of the season, beginning Friday against America East rival Stony Brook. The Retrievers and Seawolves will play a doubleheader at 3:00 p.m. to start the series, and then meet for a single on Saturday, starting at 12:00 p.m.

    BETHESDA, Md. – Senior right-hander Stephen Chrzanowski pitched a career-best eight innings, striking out a UMBC season-best 11 hitters, and freshman Conor Hax broke a 3-3 tie in the seventh with an RBI ground out as UMBC defeated Georgetown, 4-3, Wednesday night at Shirley Povich Field.

    BALTIMORE – The UMBC baseball teams finishes up its five-game road swing this week, as well as away non-conference games for the 2014 campaign, as the team travels around the beltway to take on Towson on Tuesday afternoon, and then heads south to face Georgetown on Wednesday evening at Shirley Povich Field. Game time on Tuesday against the Tigers is set for 3:30 p.m. while the Retrievers and Hoyas will meet at 7:00 p.m.

    WEST HARTFORD, Conn. – UMBC starter Joe Vanderplas tossed six solid innings and struck out a career-high six batters, but received a no-decision, as Hartford scored on a double steal in the bottom of the seventh to break a 3-3 tie and claim the series finale, 4-3, over the UMBC baseball team, Sunday afternoon at Fiondella Field.

    BALTIMORE – Looking to fight its way back into the four-team America East playoff picture, the UMBC baseball team returns to action with a key three-game series at second-place Hartford this weekend. The Retrievers and Hawks are scheduled to play a doubleheader at Fiondella Field on Saturday beginning at 12:00 p.m., and then will finish up the series with a single game on Sunday.

The Retrievers and River Hawks will kick-off the weekend with a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at noon, and then finish the set with a single game on Sunday, also set for a noon start.

    BALTIMORE – After playing just one game in the last week, a 3-0 win at Coppin State on April 23, the UMBC baseball team returns to action this week with two mid-week contests. First, the Retrievers travel to Arlington, Va. to take on George Washington on Tuesday at 1:00 p.m., before returning to Alumni Filed for the return game against CSU on Wednesday evening.

    BALTIMORE – The UMBC baseball program will honor former head coach John Jancuska in a pre-game ceremony prior to the Retrievers’ non-conference game against local rival Towson on Tuesday, April 29 at Alumni Field. The ceremony is scheduled to begin at 5:40 p.m. with first pitch between the Retrievers and Tigers set for 6:00 p.m.

    HANOVER, Md. – UMBC junior right-hander Shane Vlasic surrendered just four hits over six innings while striking out a career-high nine batters as the Retriever baseball team shut out Coppin State, 3-0, Wednesday evening in non-conference action at Joe Cannon Stadium.

    BALTIMORE – The baseball game between UMBC and George Washington scheduled for Tuesday, April 15 at 6:00 p.m. at Alumni Field has been postponed due to inclement weather in the Baltimore area. The teams have not reached an agreement on a make-up date for the game.

    BALTIMORE – On the heels of the program’s first-ever series sweep of America East rival Albany, the UMBC baseball returns to Baltimore for two mid-week games. The Retrievers will host George Washington on Tuesday for a 6:00 p.m. game at Alumni Field, and then make the short trip to Joe Cannon Stadium in Hanover, Md. to play Coppin State on Wednesday, also at 6:00 p.m.
