Baseball Drops Heartbreaker at Navy, 4-3, Friday

ANNAPOLIS, Md.—Freshman Rob McCabe (Philadelphia, Pa./St. Joseph's) went 3-for-5 with two runs scored, but Navy scored a run with the bases loaded in the ninth inning to defeat the UMBC baseball team, 4-3, Friday afternoon at Max Bishop Stadium.
Navy (3-6) loaded the bases against UMBC (0-2) junior Matt Siggins (Marriottsville, Md./Chapelgate/Frederick CC) (0-1) before Alex Azor induced a walk to score Nikolai Simonsen.
The Retrievers struck for two in the opening frame, when McCabe singled to lead-off the game and junior Michael Pesci(Parsippany, N.J./DePaul Catholic) doubled off Navy starter Ben Nelson. Junior Bryan Klukowicz (Clifton, N.J./St. Peter's Prep) hit a sacrifice fly to center to score McCabe and move over Pesci, while fellow junior Max Himmelstein () grounded out to score Pesci.
Freshman starter Shane Vlasic (Ashburn, Va./Broad Run) allowed three runs in four innings in his first appearance for UMBC, while sophomore Sam Bashioum (Fayette City, Pa./Belle Vernon Area) and juniors Luke DiBlasi (Pleasant Valley, N.Y./Arlington) and Sean Swetnam (Greenbelt, Md./Eleanor Roosevelt/George Mason) combined for four innings of scoreless relief.
Wes Olsen (1-0) pitched the final two innings for Navy to pick up the win.
The Retrievers return to action Saturday as they host Lafayette for a three-game series Saturday and Sunday. Saturday's doubleheader and Sunday's single game are scheduled to start at 1 p.m.
