Baseball Drops Rubber Game to Fairfield, 20-9, Sunday

 

BALTIMORE—The UMBC baseball scored four two-run innings, but gave up four big innings to Fairfield Sunday afternoon at the Baseball Factory Field, falling 20-9. The Retrievers fell to 1-7, while the Stags improved to 5-5. 
 

In the bottom of the first, freshman Kevin Kean (Millersville, Md./Old Mill) led off with a single off Fairfield starter Scott Gussaroff. After a redshirt freshman D.J. Ream (Columbia, Pa./Hempfield) single, junior Brian Klukowicz (Clifton, N.J./St. Peter's Prep) singled to left to score Kean. Senior Rich Conlon (Vienna, Va./James Madison) singled up the middle to bring home Ream and give the Retrievers a 2-0 lead.

 

After Fairfield struck for two in the top of the second, Kean and Ream earned two-out walks. Junior Max Himmelstein (Moorestown, N.J./Moorestown) and Klukowicz each hit RBI singles to give UMBC a 4-2 advantage.

 

Kean drove in seniors Casey Medairy (Elkridge, Md./Howard) and Dustin Ferguson (North East, Md./North East/Cecil College) with a triple to right field to extend the lead to 6-2.

 

Junior Michael Pesci (Parsippany, N.J./DePaul Catholic) hit a two-run double in the sixth, while Kean added a solo shot to left center in the eighth.

 

Mark Skrapits and Tucker Nathans each had five hits for the Stags.

 

Fairfield's Kyle Capaldo (1-0) picked up the win, pitching 5.1 innings with six strikeouts. Sophomore Sam Bashioum (Fayette City, Pa./Belle Vernon Area) took the loss, his first of the season.
