Baseball Falls to Delaware, 10-5, in 2011 Opener

 



 

BALTIMORE—The UMBC dropped its first game of the 2011 season, 10-5, to Delaware (3-5) Tuesday afternoon at the Baseball Factory Field.

 

In the bottom of the first, UMBC (0-1) freshman Rob McCabe(Philadelphia, Pa./St. Joseph's) singled and stole second before scoring on a junior Curtis Schickner (East Windsor, N.J./Lawrenceville Prep) single to left. Schickner would come around to score on a senior Dustin Ferguson (North East, Md./North East/Cecil College) single to center.

 

After the Blue Hens struck for three in the top of the sixth to take a 6-2 lead, the Retrievers bounced back with three unearned runs, including a sacrifice fly by Schickner that scored junior Michael Pesci (Parsippany, N.J./DePaul Catholic).  

 

Junior Bryan Russo (Westbury, N.Y./Clarke) and Schickner had two hits each for the Retrievers.

 

UMBC senior starting pitcher Austin Drewyer (Ellicott City, Md./River Hill) (0-1) allowed three runs in five innings of work, striking out two.

 

Delaware starter Dan Gatto allowed two runs in four and a third innings pitched. Nick Stampone (1-0) pitched one and a third innings for the win.

 

The Retrievers return to action Friday when they play at Navy at 2:30.
