BALTIMORE—UMBC baseball head coach John Jancuska announced today that seniors Rick Phillips and Rich Conlon have been named co-captains for the 2011 season, as well as the schedule for the 2011 campaign.
“Rick and Rich were nominated by their teammates and after going through an interview process with the coaching staff, we are pleased to announce them as our co-captains,” Jancuska said. “I believe they will serve this team well.”
Conlon, who spent most of the year at shortstop, hit .250 last year with two home runs and 19 runs batted in, while adding nine doubles and 19 runs scored. Phillips, who will serve as co-captain for the second consecutive year, was solid behind the plate, hitting .228 with three home runs and 16 RBI with a .985 fielding percentage.
The 2010 season will feature teams from nine different conferences as well as one independent. It also features six teams from the Baltimore/Washington, D.C. area.
“We’re very fortunate that there are a lot of good Division I programs in the area,” the coach said. “It helps us immensely as we prepare for the conference season.”
The Retrievers open the season with their first eight of nine games at home, beginning with Delaware on Tuesday, March 1 and March 4 against Navy. UMBC then hosts Lafayette for a three-game series March 5 and 6.
“I think it’s an advantage to start at home,” Jancuska said. “It allows us to play some games where our guys are comfortable and to get off on the right foot.”
