BASEBALL DEFEATS NAVY AT ALUMNI FIELD, 5-1

Sophomore righthander Matt Farina allowed only a run on four hits in 6.0 innings, as the UMBC Retrievers (16-24) defeated the Navy Midshipmen (19-22), 5-1, Wednesday afternoon at UMBC Alumni Field. The win stopped a four-game losing streak for the Retrievers.UMBC scored two runs in the bottom of the second, chasing Navy starter Matt Cooney (0-3)after just 1.1 innings of work. Reliever Ryan Naquin walked rightfielder Joe Muscillo to force home Kevin Brooks, who was hit by a Cooney pitch. Mike Orlando drove in the other run with an RBI groundout.Navy cut the deficit to just 2-1 in the top of the sixth inning as Farina balked in third baseman Chris Ashinhurst, who led off the frame with a single.The Retrievers scored three insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth, amassing four of their seven total hits in the frame. Pinch hitter Derek Fritz lined an RBI double to left plating Kyle Wildasin, who had doubled. Senior catcher Scott Kosmicky and classmate Chris Yetter added RBI singles.Farina (3-2) walked just two and fanned four batters. Yetter came on to pitch two scoreless innings and sophomore Eric Butkiewicz pitched a perfect ninth to close out the contest.Yetter and third baseman Brad Glasock each had two hits for UMBC.
