BASEBALL BLANKS MOUNT ST. MARY'S; FARINA TOSSES 3-HIT SHUTOUT

Baltimore, MD - - -UMBC sophomore righthander Matt Farina tossed a complete-game, three-hit shutout, as the Retrievers defeated the Mount St. Mary?s Mountaineers, 7-0, in a Northeast Conference game on Tuesday afternoon. UMBC improved to 15-20 (12-8 NEC) and the Mount fell to 13-20 (8-11 NEC).UMBC scored the only run that they would need on an RBI single by sophomore rightfielder Jay Long in the bottom of the second inning. The Retrievers chased Mountaineers? starting righthander Steve Stone in the bottom of the fourth as they scored five runs in the frame. UMBC had five hits in the inning, including RBI knocks by junior Chris Becraft, sophomore Mike Orlando, and junior Kevin Brooks.UMBC added a run in the fifth on a run scoring single by junior shortstop Dan Carpenter.Farina (2-2) walked just three batters and fanned seven en-route to his first career shutout. Stone yielded five earned runs in just 3.2 inning and fell to 1-2 for the Mount.UMBC senior leftfielder Chris Yetter and freshman first baseman Isaac Friedel each had three hits and Brooks and Becraft each added a pair.
