BASEBALL DROPS THIRD STRAIGHT, FALL 6-3 VERSUS LONG ISLAND
Baltimore, MD - - -The Long Island Blackbirds defeated the UMBC Retrievers, 6-3, in a Northeast Conference game on Tuesday afternoon at UMBC Alumni Field. The Blackbirds inproved to 14-18 (9-10 NEC) and the Retrievers dropped to 14-20 (11-8 NEC). It was the third straight defeat for the Retrievers.UMBC led 3-1 after five innings, but were shut down the rest of the way. The Blackbirds went ahead for good with a four-run top of the sixth inning and added an insurance run in the seventh.The Blackbirds scored the opening run of the game in the top of the second inning on a sacrifice fly by leftfielder Richard Bell. UMBC answered with two runs in the bottom of the third on a single by sophomore centerfielder Mike Orlando and a sacrifice fly by junior shortstop Dan Carpenter. The Retrievers scored their final run of the day in the bottom of the fourth on senior leftfielder Chris Yetter?s second homer of the season, which put the Retrievers up 3-1 at the time.Long Island got to UMBC freshman Tom Ballenger with a four-run sixth inning. Sophomore designated hitter Dustin Roach and Bell each had two-run doubles in the frame and Ballenger hit a pair of Blackbirds? batters.The Blackbirds scored their final run on an error by UMBC third baseman Brad Glascock in the seventh.Long Island freshman righthander John Dooley (2-1) allowed just two earned runs and scattered nine hits in his eight innings of work. Freshman righthander Matthew Bunyan came on to record his first career save in the ninth.Freshman Tom Ballenger (2-4) allowed six earned runs on seven hits in his six innings of work. Sophomore lefthander Kyle Wildasin did not allow a run in three innings of relief and allowed just one hit.Roach had a team-high two hits for LIU and Bell drove in a game-high three runs. Orlando, Yetter, and junior second baseman Kevin Brooks all had two hits for the Retrievers.
