MIKE ORLANDO NAMED NEC BASEBALL PLAYER OF WEEK; JOE WILSON PITCHER OF WEEK

UMBC sophomore outfielder Mike Orlando enjoyed a breakout week and was named the Northeast Conference Player of the Week today. Teammate Joe Wilson was named the NEC Pitcher of the Week after his brilliant performance against Long Island this past Saturday.Orlando went 12-27 (.444) at the plate with four doubles, two homers, seven runs, nine RBI and two steals on the week. In a doubleheader sweep of St. Francis (NY) on Wednesday, he had three hits in eight at-bats, including a three-run homer in the Retrievers' 13-7 win in the nightcap. After belting his fourth homer of the season in a dramatic 11-10, eight inning win over Long Island in the first game of a twinbill on Saturday, Orlando went 3-5 with two doubles and three RBI in game two as UMBC completed the sweep with an 11-0 shutout. The Rochester, NY native's recent hot spell has lifted his average from .278 to .323. Orlando ranks first on the club in homers (four) and runs scored (19) and is tied for the team lead with 15 RBI. On Saturday, Wilson won his third straight outing following an 0-5 start, tossing a two-hit shutout against Long Island. A first team all-NEC pick last season, Wilson tied a season-high with nine strikeouts as the Retrievers won their sixth straight league game, 11-0. In his last three starts - all complete games - Wilson is 3-0 with a 1.29 ERA and has allowed just 13 hits, while fanning 21 batters, in 21.0 innings of work.
