BASEBALL SWEEPS LONG ISLAND, 11-10 & 11-0

UMBC (12-15, 10-3 NEC) swept a Northeast Conference doubleheader from Long Island (11-15, 6-7 NEC), Saturday afternoon at UMBC?s Alumni Field. The Retrievers won game one in eight innings by a score of 11-10 and took the nightcap, 11-0.Trailing 10-9 with two men out and the bases empty in the bottom of the eighth inning, the Retrievers cashed in on a huge error by Blackbirds? second baseman Anthony Valvano. UMBC left fielder Chris Yetter hit a routine grounder that would have ended the contest, but Valvano booted the ball, giving the Retrievers new life. Freshman first baseman Isaac Friedel followed with a bloop single to left and advanced to second on a throwing attempt to nail pinch-runner Jack Saffron at third base. Junior second baseman Kevin Brooks then ripped a single up the middle to plate both Saffron and Friedel with the game-winning runs.Long Island led 6-1 after two innings, but the Retrievers scored six runs in the bottom of the fourth to grab an 8-6 advantage. The Blackbirds then scored three runs in the sixth to go back out on top 9-8. UMBC tied the score in the bottom of the sixth before LIU scored a single-run in the eighth to take a 10-9 lead.Brooks and senior catcher Scott Kosmicky each had three hits for the Retrievers. Sophomore lefthander Kyle Wildasin (2-1) pitched 2.2 innings to earn the victory in relief of starter Eric Butkiewicz.UMBC junior lefthander Joe Wilson (3-5) dominated the Blackbirds in game two. Wilson pitched a two-hit shutout and fanned nine batters to win his third straight decision. The Retrievers scored all 11 runs in the first three innings of the contest.UMBC lead-off batter Mike Orlando went 3-for-5 with a pair of doubles and 3 RBI?s and Yetter went 3-for-3. SO right fielder Jay Long also drove in three runs for the Retrievers.
