BASEBALL UNABLE TO HOLD LATE LEAD; FALL 9-4 AGAINST GEORGE WASHINGTON

    GEORGE WASHINGTON ERASES LATE 4-0 DEFICIT; DEFEATS UMBC, 9-4Baltimore, MD - - -George Washington trailed 4-0 after six innings, but scored five runs in the seventh and added four more in the ninth to defeat UMBC, 9-4, Tuesday afternoon at UMBC Alumni Field. The Colonials improved to 20-11 and the Retrievers fell to 8-15.UMBC senior righthander Mike Johnson (0-1), making his first start of the season, allowed no runs and just five hits in the first six innings, but surrendered five runs and five hits in the top of the seventh inning. Johnson was able to retire the first two batters before allowing four straight singles, followed by a hit batter and another single. The Retrievers also made three throwing errors in the frame. Matt Owens, Jeff Fertitta, and Brad Rosenblat all had RBI hits for George Washington.The Colonials added four insurance runs in the top of the ninth inning off relievers Mark Maydak and Chris Yetter. Rosenblat smacked a two-run homer off Yetter to highlight the inning.UMBC scored a run in the fifth on an RBI single by Rich Northrup, and added three more in the sixth on run-scoring hits by Chris Yetter , Jake Bennof, and Kevin Brooks.Reliever Dennis Gramolini (1-2) allowed no runs in 3.1 innings to earn the victory in relief for George Washington. Starter Nate CasaGrande got a no-decision after allowing three earned runs in 5.2 innings of work.Colonials? center fielder Chris Barry went 4-for-5 with an RBI and Rosenblat was 3-for-3 with a game-high 3 RBI?s.Mike Orlando went 3-for-4 to lead the Retrievers? attack.
