BASEBALL TAKES RUBBER-GAME FROM SACRED HEART, 7-1; BALLENGER TOSSES COMPLETE-GAME GEM

    UMBC freshman righthander Tom Ballenger (2-2) gave the Retrievers just what the doctor ordered, a complete-game victory over Sacred Heart on Monday afternoon. Ballenger allowed just a run and scattered just seven hits in the Retrievers' 7-1 victory at Harbor Yard in Bridgeport, Connecticut. UMBC improved to 8-14 (6-3 NEC) and the Pioneers fell to 8-17 (4-7 NEC). The victory gave the Retrievers a 2-1 series victory. With the Retrievers slated to play three games in the next two day's, including a make-up doubleheader against St. Francis (NY) on Wednesday at UMBC Alumni Field, Ballenger's effort was even more crucial. In fact, the Retrievers received complete-game efforts from all three of their starters in the series. Senior catcher Scott Kosmicky powered the Retrievers to a quick 2-0 leadafter he bashed his third homer of the season in the top of thefirst inning. UMBC went up 4-0 after they received a pair of gift runs in the second as two runs scored on a Pioneer error. SO Mike Orlando and JR Dan Carpenter gave the Retrievers a 6-0 advantage with run scoring hits. SR Chris Yetter went 3-4 and Orlando, Carpenter, and SO Jay Long all added a pair of hits.
