BASEBALL COMPLETES THREE-GAME SWEEP OF NEC RIVAL WAGNER

    Baltimore, MD - - -The UMBC Retrievers completed a three-game sweep of Northeast Conference rival Wagner (3-22, 2-7 NEC) on Sunday afternoon at UMBC Alumni Field. UMBC (6-13, 4-2 NEC) won the first game by a score of 6-3 and took the nightcap, 4-3.UMBC junior lefthander Joe Wilson picked up his first victory of the season in the opener as he limited the Seahawks to just six hits and two earned runs in a complete-game, seven-inning effort. Wilson (1-5) struck out four batters and walked three. The Retrievers scored three runs in the bottom of the first inning and added on three more in the fifth to claim a 6-1 advantage. Freshman first baseman Isaac Friedel, senior right fielder Chris Yetter, and senior third baseman Brad Glascock each drove in a pair of runs to highlight the Retrievers? attack. Wagner senior righthander Jon Polonitza fell to 1-5 after allowing five earned runs and 11 hits in his 6.0 innings of work for the Seahawks. Junior first baseman Chris Dick and sophomore center fielder Kane Furst each had a pair of hits for Wagner.Freshman righthander Tom Ballenger (1-2) recorded his first career victory in the second game as he allowed just one earned run in 6.0 innings of work. UMBC senior catcher Scott Kosmicky staked the Retrievers to a 4-0 lead as he smacked a three-run homer in the bottom of the third inning. Dick brought the Seahawks within just a run as he led off the top of the ninth inning with his a homer off sophomore reliever Kyle Wildasin, but Wildasin retired the next three batters to pick up his first save of the season. Friedel went 3-for-4 and Kosmicky added a 2-for-4 performance. Seahawks? freshman righthander Andrew Bailey (1-4) was hit with the loss after he allowed three earned runs in 6.0 innings of work.
