GEORGE MASON ERUPTS EARLY; HANDS UMBC 14-4 DEFEAT IN BASEBALL

Baltimore, MD - - -The visiting George Mason Patriots (13-10) led 8-0 after the first two innings and went on to a 14-4 victory over the UMBC Retrievers (3-13), in a non-conference baseball game on Wednesday afternoon at UMBC Alumni Field.The Patriots roughed up UMBC starting lefthander Kyle Wildasin (0-1) for eight earned runs in just 1.2 innings. George Mason scored a pair of runs on two hits and a walk in the top of the first inning. Sophomore first baseman Chris Looze opened the scoring with an RBI single and junior third baseman Nick Shimer added an RBI groundout.George Mason ended Wildasin?s day in the top of the second as they scored six runs on four hits, two bases on balls, and hit batter. Senior left fielder Evan Howard recorded a two-run double as did Shimer in the frame.The Patriots led 10-0 before UMBC got on the board in the bottom of the fifth inning as junior second basemen Kevin Brooks plated a pair of runs with a single. He was credited with just one RBI after an error by Looze allowed another Retriever runner to score.George Mason senior righthander Marcus Davis (1-1) turned in a strong effort as he allowed just one earned run and 5 hits in 6.0 innings of work. Shimer drove in a game-high 4 runs for the Patriots and Howard, center fielder Bruce Baldwin, and Looze all had three hits and 2 RBI?s.Brooks went 2-for-4 to lead the Retrievers offense. - - -UMBC - - -
