BASEBALL DROPS RUBBER GAME AT MONMOUTH, 6-2
3/23/2003
WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. Monmouth University posted a come-from-behind, 6-2, victory over UMBC Sunday afternoon to take two out of three games in its Northeast Conference opening series.
Trailing 2-0 going into the bottom of the fifth, Monmouth scored runs in the fifth, seventh and eighth innings to secure the win.
With UMBC up by a pair of runs, the Hawks started the bottom of the fifth inning with a pair of runners as Evan Clancy reached base on an error by Retrievers third baseman Brad Glascock and Frank Pilitowski laced a single to leftfield. A balk by UMBC starter Tom Ballenger allowed runners to advance to second and third. Jon Lewis plated both Clancy and Pilitowski with a two-run single to rightfield to knot the game at 2-2.
Monmouth (4-10, 2-1 NEC) went ahead in the seventh inning. Mike St. Martine led off the inning with a single to left centerfield and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Clancy laid down a sacrifice bunt to move St. Martine third base and he touched the dish on a wild pitch to give MU a 3-2 advantage.
The Hawks added three insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth. With one out, Mike Kelly singled to rightfield and moved to second base on a ground out by Cip Apicelli. Lance Koenig drew a walk to put runners at first and second, setting up a three-run home run to right centerfield by St. Martine. It was St. Martines third dinger of the season.
UMBC (3-10, 1-2 NEC) drew first blood in the top of the third inning. After MU third baseman Marc Weres dropped a foul ball, Retriever shortstop Dan Carpenter led off the inning with a double to centerfield. Centerfielder Joe Muscillo laced a single to right field to push Carpenter across for the first run. A bunt single by rightfielder Mike Orlando and a throwing error by Monmouth starter Jim Carone put runners at second and third. The damage of the inning was minimalized on the next at-bat as leftfielder Chris Yetter grounded out unassisted to first base. On the play, Orlando strayed from second base allowing Clancy to make a pickoff throw to Kelly at shortstop. With a runner at third and two outs catcher Scott Kosmicky hit a two-run double to score Muscillo and give UMBC a 2-0 lead.
Jim Carone (1-2) picked up the win for the Hawks. The 2002 Northeast Conference Pitcher of the Year scattered 10 hits and two walks over 8.0 innings of work. He allowed two runs, both unearned, striking out two and walking two. Kelly pitched a perfect ninth inning in a non-save situation. He struck out two Retrievers.
Tom Ballenger (0-2) was saddled with the loss for the Retrievers. He allowed six runs, five earned, on six hits over 7.2 innings of work. Ballenger walked two Hawks and fanned five.
St. Martine was 2-of-4 with two runs scored and three runs batted in to lead the Hawks at the plate. Lewis went 1-of-3 with two RBI.
Chris Becraft and Carpenter each went 2-of-4 for UMBC. Muscillo and Kosmicky provided the Retrievers only RBI.
Monmouth returns to action on Tuesday as the Hawks travel to South Orange, N.J., for a 3 p.m. contest at Seton Hall University.
