3/15/2003

Baltimore, MD – UMBC (2-4) exploded for 14 hits as they defeated Fairfield (0-3), 14-3, this afternoon for the first home game at the UMBC Alumni Field. The Retrievers, who scored five runs in both the fourth and fifth innings, were led by Chris Becraft, who went 3-for-4 with 3 runs scored and seven RBI’s.

With a 1-0 lead going into the fourth inning, UMBC’s bats came alive as sophomore Zach Clark led off with a single. Brad Glascock walked before Scott Kosmicky and Chris Yetter followed with base hits to extend the Retriever lead to 3-0. With two on, Becraft doubled to score both Kosmicky and Yetter.

Fairfield would use three pitchers in the losing effort, but starter Tom Maisano was tabbed with the loss, as he gave up six runs on eight hits in 3.1 innings of work. For UMBC, Eric Butkiewicz was awarded the win, as he gave up three runs on eight hits in five innings.

UMBC returns to action on Sunday, March 16, when they host Fairfield for a doubleheader beginning at noon.
