BASEBALL RECORDS FIRST VICTORY OF SEASON; ZACH CLARK SHUTS DOWN CLEVELAND STATE, 4-2
3/11/2003
UMBC sophomore righthander Zach Clark (1-1) allowed just one earned run in his seven innings of work as the Retrievers defeated Cleveland State (0-3) in Arlington, Virginia this afternoon. It was the first victory of the season for UMBC (1-3).
The Retrievers trailed 2-1 after three innings, but freshman third baseman Chris Parker hit a 1-out, bases-loaded single to plate two runs in the top of the fourth. It turned out to be all of the runs that UMBC would need as Clark did not allow another run. Clark yielded just 5 hits, while walking just one and fanning four.
JR third baseman Dan Carpenter added some insurance in the top of the fifth inning with an RBI single.
SO righthander Eric Butkiewicz pitched two scoreless innings to record his first career save.
Senior rightfielder Chris Yetter provided UMBC with their first run of the contest, an RBI single in the top of the third. Carpenter went 2-for-4 and freshman first baseman Isaac Friedel added a double and a walk.
