Tom Gilchrist leads the Retrievers with a .293 average

BALTIMORE, Md. – After falling on Wednesday night to Buffalo, 16-8, at home, the UMBC baseball team now hits the road for a 12-game road swing with trips to New Orleans, La. and Farmville, Va. on the slate.  The Retrievers begin the road set with a three-game weekend series against local rival Coppin State at Joe Cannon Stadium.

Game times are set for 5 p.m. on Friday evening, followed by 12 p.m. start times for both Saturday and Sunday.

Sophomore Jon Cohn (Scottsdale, Ariz./Notre Dame Prep)  will make the start for the Retrievers on Friday.  The right-hander is 0-3 this season after taking the loss last Sunday against Navy.

UMBC sophomore Shane Vlasic (Ashburn, Va./Broad Run) heads to the mound on Saturday looking to build on his last start on Sunday against the Midshipmen.  Against Navy, Vlasic (0-1) gave up six runs in 6.1 innings of work for his first decision of the year.

In the series finale, senior Steve Miller (Newark, Del./Dickinson) gets the ball for the Retrievers.  The veteran right-hander is 0-2 this season with a 6.35 ERA.

The two schools, which are only separated by seven miles, have not met since the 2004 season.  Coppin State won the only game that year, 6-3, in ten innings.

The Eagles are 0-13 this season after falling to Lehigh, 14-4, on Tuesday night.

UMBC now stands at 2-10 following Wednesday’s loss to Buffalo.  Junior Tom Gilchrist (Olney, Md./Sherwood/Cheseapeake CC) and Brian Klukowicz (Clifton, N.J./St. Peter’s Prep) each homered for the Retrievers giving the squad seven on the year which matches UMBC’s total for all of 2011.

Gilchrist leads UMBC at the plate with a .293 average (12-for-41) early in the season.  He also has knocked in a team-leading seven RBIs and has hit two round trippers this year.  Senior Max Himmelstein (Moorestown, N.J./Moorestown) is not far behind, posting a .289 average (13-for-45) to go with three homeruns and five RBIs through twelve games in 2012.
