BALTIMORE – UMBC baseball coach Bob Mumma has named seniors Josh Dick (Winchester, Va./James Wood) and Curtis Schickner (East Windsor, N.J/Lawrenceville Prep), as well as sophomore Rob McCabe (Philadelphia, Pa./St. Joseph’s) as tri-captains for the upcoming 2012 season, the team announced on Wednesday.
“These three guys have all gone about their business the right way,” said head coach Mumma. “Whether it has been on the field or in the classroom, these three are great examples for their teammates.”
Dick, a senior from Winchester, Va., was one of the most consistent relievers for the Retrievers a year ago. As a junior he made 15 appearances, recording a 1-1 record with a team-best 3.60 ERA. In 25.0 innings of work out of the pen, Dick notched nine strikeouts.
“Josh has worked hard for three years to develop and his work ethic is second to none,” said Mumma.
Joining Dick will be classmate Curtis Schickner. Manning the hot corner, Schickner will be looked to for guidance in the infield after finishing with a .928 fielding percentage in 2011.
“Curtis represents the team and the programs in the best possible manner, especially with his involvement in SAAC, adding to his leadership and maturity,” coach Mumma said.
Adding youth to the leadership, sophomore Rob McCabe has already earned his stripes playing in 45 of UMBC’s 47 games a year ago, making 38 starts along the way. In the process, the Philadelphia native hit .270 with seven doubles and 10 RBIs during his rookie season.
“This is a unique situation, but the staff saw his leadership skills early last year and his teammates clearly see that as well,” coach Mumma said.
The Retrievers open their season on Friday, March 24th when they take on Georgetown in Winston Salem, N.C. as a part of a four team weekend tournament. Also taking part will be tournament host Wake Forest as well as Cincinnati.
