Baseball Drops Two at Maine Sunday

    ORONO, Maine—Junior Luke DiBlasi (Pleasant Valley, N.Y./Arlington) threw his first collegiate complete game, but the UMBC baseball team fell in the final game of a four-game series at Maine, 3-2. The Retrievers (6-30, 0-13 America East) dropped the first game of the doubleheader Sunday to Black Bears (19-21, 9-5 AE), 6-1.

     

    DiBlasi (1-2) pitched eight innings, striking out three while allowing three runs on seven hits.

     

    Down two in the sixth, senior Rich Conlon (Vienna, Va./James Madison) doubled to score freshman Rob McCabe (Philadelphia, Pa./St. Joseph’s) to cut the lead to one. Redshirt freshman D.J. Ream (Columbia, Pa./Hempfield) tied the game in the seventh with his first home run of the season.

     

    Maine’s Justin Leisenheimer hit a solo shot in the bottom of the seventh for the game-winning run. Kevin Scanlan (1-1) earned the win, pitching two innings of scoreless relief, after starter A.J. Bazdanes allowed two runs in six innings of work. D.J. Voisine threw a perfect ninth for his third save.

     

    In the first game, senior starter Austin Drewyer (Ellicott City, Md./River Hill) pitched his fifth complete game of the season, allowing six runs in six innings of work, but fell to 2-7 on the season.

     

    The Retrievers’ lone run came in the fifth when senior Rick Phillips (Gaithersburg, Md./Gaithersburg) scored on a fellow senior Casey Medairy (Elkridge, Md./Howard) single to right.

     

    Leisenheimer hit a home run in the first game as well to lead Maine.

     

    The Retrievers return home to face Georgetown Wednesday evening at 6 p.m. The game will be broadcast live at UMBCRetrievers.tv.
