BALTIMORE—The UMBC baseball team fell to local rival Maryland, 10-7, Wednesday evening after the Terrapins scored in each of their first six innings. With the loss, the Retrievers drop to 7-18, while the Terps improve to 14-21.

UMBC loaded the bases in the bottom of the fifth before sophomores Brian Klukowicz (Clifton, N.J./St. Peter's Prep) and Michael Pesci (Parsippany, N.J./DePaul Catholic) walked to score the Retrievers’ first two runs.

After sophomore Max Himmelstein (Moorestown, N.J./Moorestown) grounded out to score fellow sophomore Mike Lafferty (Annapolis, Md./Mount St. Joseph/Marietta College), junior Bryan Russo (Westbury, N.Y./Clarke) hit a two-run triple to right-center field to cut the lead to 7-5. Sophomore Curtis Schickner (East Windsor, N.J./Lawrenceville Prep) followed with a RBI single to bring UMBC within one.

Junior Rick Phillips (Gaithersburg, Md./Gaithersburg) hit his first home run of the season in the eighth inning to left field to conclude the scoring for the Retrievers.

Pesci (1-2) started for the Retrievers, allowing six runs (five earned) in four-plus innings of work.

Maryland starter Blair Delean allowed four runs in 4.1 innings pitched. Ian Schwalenberg (4-2) earned the win, allowing one run in 3.1 innings of work.

Russo now has an extra-base hit in each of his last five games.

The Retrievers return to action at Stony Brook for a three-game series this weekend. The two teams have a double-header at noon on Saturday and a single game at 1 p.m. Sunday.
