BALTIMORE—UMBC head baseball coach John Jancuska announced today that senior Scott Wildesen (Oakland, Md./Southern Garrett) and junior Rick Phillips (Gaithersburg,Md./Gaithersburg) have been named captains for the 2010 season.
“We had a number of quality candidates that went through the nomination and interview process and we are pleased to announce that Rick and Scott have been voted by their teammates to be this year’s captains,” Jancuska said.
Phillips, a catcher, appeared in 16 games for the Retrievers in 2009. He hit his first career grand slam against Maine on April 19.
Wildesen saw action in five outings as a relief pitcher for UMBC in 2009. He did not allow a run in his final three appearances of the year and struck out two in an inning of work against Vermont on May 10.
“These two lead by example in all of the critical areas one would want a team captain to excel in, both on and off the field,” the coach said. “Both work very hard every day of the year on the field and both excel academically.”
