Retz, Meaney Homer as UMBC Baseball Drops Season Finale to Georgetown, 10-3

    Senior Tom Meaney hit a home run in his final at-bat as a Retriever.

    BALTIMOREThe UMBC baseball team’s 2009 season came to a close Tuesday night as they fell to Georgetown, 10-3, at The Baseball Factory Field at UMBC. The Retrievers finish the year 9-36.

     

    In the bottom of the first inning senior Shawn Retz (Baltimore, Md./Western Tech/Catonsville C.C.) hit a towering ball to left field for his team-leading 10th home run of the season and give the Retrievers a 1-0 lead.

     

    The Hoyas took the lead on a Andy Lentz two-run double in the top of the second and Sean Lamont hit a three-run home run to center to power the Hoyas.

     

    In the bottom of the ninth, Retz doubled to left and senior Tom Meaney (Holbrook, N.Y./Sachem) launched a two-run shot to left in their final at-bats as Retrievers.

     

    Senior starter Ryan Morse (Frederick, Md./Catoctin/Chesapeake JC) (0-4) started the first game of his career in his last as a Retriever, allowing three runs in two innings with two strikeouts. Georgetown starter Billy Concannon (0-1) struck out four in five innings to earn the win, allowing just Retz home run.

     

    It was the final game for seven seniors, including Dan Blewett (Bel Air, Md./Bel Air), Wink Nolan (Ellicott City, Md./Calvert Hall/Maryland) Dave Warrenfeltz (Hagerstown, Md./Williamsport), Brad Brainer (Chester, Md./Kent Island/Chesapeake JC), Retz, Meaney and Morse.
