UMBC Baseball Falls to Towson, 5-1, in Rain-Shortened Game Tuesday Night

    BALTIMOREThe UMBC baseball team dropped a 5-1 decision to Towson Tuesday night. The game was called after five innings due to weather in the Baltimore area. With the loss the Retrievers drop to 9-31 on the season.

     

    UMBC opened the scoring in the bottom of the second, sophomore Bryan Russo (Westbury, N.Y./Clarke) walked before moving to third on a sophomore Rich Conlon (Vienna, Va./James Madison) single. He scored on a sacrifice fly by freshman Justin Lamborn (Glen Mills, Pa./Garnett Valley). The Tigers responded in the top of the third with four runs, highlighted by a Gary Helmick two-run home run to left.

     

    Towson starter Zach Umberger (3-3) struck out six in four innings of work, while Josh Squatrito struck out three in one inning of relief. UMBC junior starter Kevin Clark (Alexandria, Va./Hayfield/Catonsville C.C.) (3-3) struck out three in five innings of work, allowed five runs, one earned, to take the loss.

     

    The Retrievers return to action this weekend when they travel to Vermont for their final America East series of the season. Saturday’s doubleheader starts at 1 p.m., while Sunday’s starts at noon.
