Retriever Baseball Loses Sixth Straight, 5-2, at George Washington Tuesday

    ARLINGTON, Va.The UMBC baseball team dropped its sixth straight game, falling to George Washington, 5-2, in Arlington, Va. Tuesday afternoon. With the loss, the Retrievers drop to 4-14, while the Colonials improve to 14-14.

     

    Four GW pitchers scattered nine hits as Michael Boyden (1-1) picked up the win. Freshman Brian Klukowicz (Clifton, N.J./St. Peter's Prep) (0-1) struck out three for the Retrievers, while allowing four runs in four innings.

     

    After the Colonials struck first for two runs in the fourth inning, senior Brad Brainer (Chester, Md./Kent Island/Chesapeake JC) led off the fifth with a double before stealing third. He cut GW’s lead to one as he came home on a grounder to second by fellow senior Wink Nolan (Ellicott City, Md./Calvert Hall/Maryland).

     

    George Washington would add two more in the bottom of the fifth and one in the eighth before sophomore Rick Phillips (Gaithersburg, Md./Gaithersburg) scored on a sacrifice fly by sophomore Casey Medairy (Elkridge, Md./Howard) in the ninth to close out the scoring.

     

    The Retrievers open America East conference play Saturday as they travel to Albany for a doubleheader that begins at noon.
