UMBC Baseball Falls to Mount St. Mary's, 7-3
Senior Wink Nolan scored two runs Tuesday.
EMMITSBURG, Md.—The UMBC baseball team fell to Mount St. Mary’s, 7-3, Tuesday afternoon to fall to 4-9 on the season. With the win, the Mount improved to 6-9.
The Retrievers opened the scoring in the third after senior Shawn Retz (Baltimore, Md./Western Tech/Catonsville C.C.) walked with the bases loaded to score freshman Curtis Schickner (East Windsor, N.J./Lawrenceville Prep), but could not add to the lead against Mount’s starter Max Brittenham.
After Mount St. Mary’s tied the game in the fourth, UMBC answered with two in the fifth inning. Schickner scored on a senior Brad Brainer (Chester, Md./Kent Island/Chesapeake JC) double, before Retz drove home Brainer on a fielder’s choice.
The Mount took a 4-3 lead in the bottom of the inning on a Mike Matta two-run single and a Matt Staso sacrifice fly. Mount St. Mary’s would add one in the sixth and two in the eighth to end the scoring.
UMBC starter junior Ed Bach (Columbia, Md./Atholton) (0-4) struck out three in six innings pitched, allowing five runs, three earned. Freshman Brian Klukowicz (Clifton, N.J./St. Peter's Prep) allowed two runs, both unearned, in two innings of relief.
The Retrievers return to action Wednesday when they travel to College Park, Md. to play Maryland at 7 p.m.
