UMBC Baseball Defeats Long Island, 10-8, Friday

    Sophomore Austin Drewyer struck out seven Friday.

    WEST PALM BEACH, Fla.—The UMBC baseball team scored three runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to help secure a 10-8 victory over Long Island in the final game of its Spring Break Florida trip. The Retrievers finished 3-4 on the trip and are now 4-8 on the season.

     

    It was a big day for the senior bats of UMBC as Tom Meaney (Holbrook, N.Y./Sachem) went 3-for-5 with five RBI, including a three-run home run in the first inning, and Shawn Retz (Baltimore, Md./Western Tech/Catonsville C.C.) 4-for-4 with two doubles and two RBI.

     

    After LIU cut the Retriever to lead to 7-6 in the seventh, senior Brad Brainer (Chester, Md./Kent Island/Chesapeake JC) singled and freshman Justin Lamborn (Glen Mills, Pa./Garnett Valley) doubled to lead off the eighth for UMBC. After a Retz intentional walk, Meaney singled in Brainer and Lamborn to give the Retrievers a 9-6 lead. Sophomore Sterling Sams (Vienna, Va./James Madison) would add a sacrifice fly to conclude the scoring for the Dawgs.

     

    Retriever starter sophomore Austin Drewyer (Ellicott City, Md./River Hill) struck out seven in six innings pitched, while fellow sophomore Marty Zawacki (Hebron, Md./James Bennett) struck out five in just 2 and 2/3 innings of work.

     

    The Retrievers return to action Tuesday when they play at Mount St. Mary’s at 3:30 p.m.
