UMBC Baseball Begins Spring Break Trip with 16-9 Loss to Ohio State

    Sophomore Casey Medairy had his first multi-hit game of the season Saturday.

    WEST PALM BEACH, Fla.--The UMBC baseball team dropped a 16-9 decision to Ohio State on Saturday afternoon in West Palm Beach, Fla. Senior Shawn Retz (Baltimore, Md./Western Tech/Catonsville C.C.) led the Retrievers with 4 RBI and his fourth home run of the season as UMBC fell to 1-5 on the season, while OSU improved to 12-2. This was the first of seven games of the Retrievers' Spring Break trip in Florida.

    The Buckeyes out-hit the Retrievers 20-10 as Ohio State scored six runs in the fifth inning to propel them over UMBC. Retriever junior starter Ed Bach (Columbia, Md./Atholton) pitched three innings without allowing an earned run, while Ohio State starter Eric Best (2-0) allowed three runs in five innings to earn the win. Freshman Michael Pesci (Parsippany, N.J./DePaul Catholic) took the loss for UMBC to fall to 0-2.

    Sophomore Casey Medairy (Elkridge, Md./Howard) and freshman Justin Lamborn (Glen Mills, Pa./Garnett Valley) each had two hits for their first multi-hit games of the season.

    The Retrievers return to action Sunday vs. Pittsburgh at 4 p.m. in West Palm Beach, Fla.
