JARED BOYD'S GAME-WINNING SINGLE LIFTS BASEBALL OVER MONMOUTH, 9-8, IN TEN INNINGS

    Senior shortstop Jared Boyd delivered a game-winning two-out single in the bottom of the tenth inning against Monmouth this afternoon.

    Baltimore, MD - - -UMBC senior shortop Jared Boyd laced a game-winning, two-out single in the bottom of the tenth inning to give the Retrievers a, 9-8, Northeast Conference victory over the Monmouth Hawks, Sunday afternoon at Alumni Field.The Retrievers (29-22, 20-7 NEC) began the tenth inning rally with one man out as sophomore left fielder Rick Guarno reached on an infield single. Following a fielders choice out at second base, Retrievers' second baseman Dan Carpenter was hit by Monmouth (29-19, 23-4 NEC) reliever Enrique Genao. Boyd then delivered a slicing single that landed in front of Hawks' center fielder Chuck Gookins, who dove for the ball, but was unable to get a glove on it. Pinch runner Joe Muscillo came home with the winning run.The Hawks led 5-0 after four and a half innings, but were unable to protect the lead. UMBC scored five unearned runs as Monmouth made six errors in the contest, including three by third baseman Fran Rotella. Trailing 5-4 in the bottom of the sixth inning, the Retrievers scored three runs to grab a 7-5 advantage. UMBC used three Hawk's errors and a key two-out single by senior center fielder John Shuler to gain their first lead of the day. Monmouth responded by scoring three times in the top of the eighth inning to go back up on top by a score of 8-7. The Retrievers made three errors in the frame and Gookins and second baseman Lance Koenig hit run scoring sacrifice flies.UMBC forced an extra frame as they tied the score off Geneo, who came in to relieve starter Frank Pilitowski. Boyd opened the frame with a lead-off single and advanced two bases on a sacrifice bunt by Shuler. Junior third baseman Brad Glascock followed with a game-tying double to right field.UMBC freshman lefty Kyle Wildasin improved to 4-1 as he allowed no earned runs in three innings in relief of freshman starter Eric Butkiewicz, who allowed five earned runs and 12 hits in seven innings.Geneo (3-4) took the loss for Monmouth after he was unable to save the game for Pilitowski, who allowed just two earned runs and four hits in eight innings of work.Boyd led UMBC with a 3-for-5 day and Glascock (2-for-5) added three runs batted in.Koenig went 2-for-4 with 3 RBI's and first baseman Evan Clancy added a pair of RBI's for Monmouth.- - -UMBC - - -
