BASEBALL TAKES RUBBER GAME AT WAGNER, 9-3

Staten Island, NY (May 5, 2002) -- UMBC's Eric Butkiewicz (6-1) tossed six innings allowing three runs and Kyle Wildasin threw three innings of relief, striking out three to lead the Retriever baseball team to a 9-3 victory over host Wagner College this afternoon. UMBC improves to 28-18, 19-5 in the Northeast Conference while Wagner falls to 9-37, 6-18 in the league. Brad Glascock was 3-5 with two RBI while Jared Boyd was 2-4 with a run scored and two RBI for the Retrievers. John Shuler went 1-4 with two runs scored and three RBI for the winners. Zach Clark also notched two hits. Wagner received three hits from Chris Dick and Joe Agnello was 2-4 with a RBI. Seahawk lefty starter Rob Kostic suffered the loss, dropping his record to 2-7 as he allowed six earned runs on ten hits in six innings. UMBC tallied a run in both the fourth and fifth innings before pushing across five runs in the sixth to open a 7-0 lead. Scott Kosmicky lined a two-out RBI single in the fourth and Boyd ripped a RBI single in the fifth for a 2-0 Retriever lead. Then in the sixth, Kostic retired the first two UMBC hitters but the next six hitters reached base on four singles, a walk and big three-RBI double by Shuler. Wagner cut the lead to 7-1 with a run in the sixth inning on Agnello's RBI double and then the Seahawks plated two more runs in the seventh on a Zach Fazio RBI double and a sacrifice fly by Anthony Gioielli to make the score, 7-3.UMBC put the game out of reach in the eighth off of Wagner reliever Mike Windstein when Glascock hammered a double to centerfield to drive in two more runs.
