BASEBALL WINS 23-13 SLUGFEST

    Baltimore, MD - - -The host UMBC Retrievers (26-15, 17-4 NEC) completed a three-game sweep of Northeast Conference rival Quinnipiac (8-26, 6-15 NEC) after defeating the Braves 23-13, in a slugfest at Alumni Field on Monday afternoon.UMBC scored at least two runs in every inning with the exception of the seventh, when they were shutout. The two teams combined to tie an NCAA Division I record for doubles (17) and UMBC (11 doubles) fell just two shy of equaling the mark by a single team.The Retrievers led 9-2 after three innings, but Quinnipiac scored seven runs in the top of the fourth inning to even the game at 9-9. However, UMBC answered with six runs in the bottom of the fourth to go back up 15-9 and the Braves never threatened again.UMBC freshman left-hander Kyle Wildasin (3-1) came out of the bullpen to record the victory in relief of starter Eric Butkiewicz, who allowed eight earned runs in just 3.1 innings. Wildasin allowed four earned runs in 3.2 innings of work and junior Chris Yetter pitched two scoreless innings to wrap up the win for UMBC. Braves' righty Chris Gresh fell to 1-6 after he allowed six earned runs in 3.0 innings of work.Retrievers' senior shortstop Jared Boyd (5-for-7, 2B, HR) and designated hitter Yetter (5-for-5, 3 2B's) combined for 9 RBI's and senior outfielder John Shuler (3-for-6, 5 runs) added 4 RBI's.Braves' third baseman Chris Stonaha went 3-for-5 with 5 RBI's and second baseman Charles D'Elia added a 3-for-5 day.- - -UMBC - - -
