UMBC Baseball's Conlon Named to All-Championship Team

5/27/2008

Freshman Rich Conlon batted in two of the Retrievers three runs against Stony Brook.

FARMINGDALE, N.Y.—UMBC baseball freshman Rich Conlon (Vienna, Va./James Madison) has been named to the America East All-Championship Team as a shortstop, the conference announced on Saturday following the America East Championship game.

Conlon was just one of four Retrievers to record an extra-base hit in UMBC’s two games during the tournament and batted .286 with two hits, a double, and two RBI.

The rookie led the Retrievers in their opening game against Stony Brook on Thursday, batting in two runs with a two-out single to right center in the top of the seventh, which cut the Seawolves lead to just one run.

Conlon also tallied a double in the ninth and became the potential winning run for the Retrievers, but the Seawolves got out of the inning unscathed and added one run of their own in the bottom of the ninth for the 4-3 decision.

Stony Brook’s Steve Mazzurco was named the tournament’s Most Outstanding Player  after hitting .455 for the weekend with two doubles in three games.

The Retrievers were eliminated from the America East Championship and ended the 2008 season last Friday with a 5-1 loss to Vermont.
