UMBC Baseball Junior Retz Named America East Player of the Week
Junior Shawn Retz is the third Retriever to earn a weekly conference award this season.
The junior led the Retrievers last weekend as they won their second straight season series, downing the defending America East Conference champion Albany Great Danes, three games to one at UMBC.
Retz hit .615 for the week with eight hits, one double and one home run, while batting in 10 runners and crossing home plate three times. He also slugged .923 during the four-game series and held an exceptional .706 on-base percentage.
Retz reached base twice after being hit by pitch and is tied with junior Tom Meaney (Holbrook, N.Y./Sachem) with 10 instances this season, just one away from the current school record of 11, which was set by senior Mark Lemon (Wilmington, Del./St. Mark’s) in 2005.
Retz is the third Retriever to be honored by the conference this season and the second in as many weeks as redshirt freshman Austin Drewyer (Ellicott City, Md./River Hill) picked up the Rookie of the Week nod last week and senior Joe Fowler (Wilmington, Del./St. Mark’s) earned the Player of the Week accolade for the week ending March 9.
