CAMBRIDGE, Mass.—UMBC baseball redshirt freshman Austin Drewyer (Ellicott City, Md./River Hill) has been named the America East Conference Rookie of the Week for the week ending April 27, the conference announced Monday. Drewyer earned the first save and first win of his collegiate career during last weekend’s sweep of Hartford, the Retrievers’ first-ever four-game series sweep. Drewyer made three appearances on the week for a total of 9.2 innings pitched and generated a 0.93 ERA, giving up just one earned run on 11 hits. The redshirt freshman started the week off with a start against George Washington, where he pitched three scoreless innings and gave up just three hits while fanning two batters and brought that momentum into the weekend, earning a save in the first game against Hartford on Friday after pitching 2.2 innings in relief and allowing just one run on four hits while striking out one batter. Drewyer’s best would be saved for last, however, as he earned his first collegiate win in the series finale, which completed the Retrievers’ first-ever sweep by pitching four innings in relief and giving up three unearned runs on four hits and striking out the final two batters of the game. Drewyer is the second Retriever to earn a weekly award this season as senior Joe Fowler (Wilmington, Del./St. Mark’s) got the Player of the Week nod for the week ending March 9.
