Senior Joe Fowler tallied his 61st career double to tie the school record on Saturday.

VESTAL, N.Y.—Senior Joe Fowler tallied his 10th double of the year in the first half of a doubleheader against Binghamton on Saturday at Varsity Field to tie the school record for career doubles.  Fowler added his 61st career double as the UMBC baseball split the doubleheader, tying Jared Boyd for the career doubles record.  The Retrievers (10-18, 2-5 America East) fell, 13-2 in game one, but never trailed in game two on the way to the 9-4 victory over the Bearcats (9-20, 2-5 America East).

Fowler went 1-for-3 in game one, bringing in one of two runs for the Retrievers, while junior Wink Nolan (Ellicott City, Md./Calvert Hall/Maryland) was also 1-for-3 with one run batted in, one run scored, and his 17th double of the season.  Sophomore Ed Bach (3-3) (Columbia, Md./Atholton) was tabbed with the loss after giving up 11 runs, eight earned, on 12 hits, while walking three and fanning just one batter in 4.2 innings of work.

Joe Charron led the way for Binghamton going 3-for-5 with two runs scored, five RBI, a double and a home run, while Jeff Dennis (2-4) went the distance on the mound, allowing just two Retriever runs on five hits, while fanning four in seven innings.

Junior Shawn Retz (Baltimore, Md./Western Tech/Catonsville C.C.) swung a big bat for the Retrievers in the second half of the twinbill, going 3-for-3 with one run scored, two RBI, and two doubles, while senior Steve Russo (Lancaster, Pa./Conestoga Valley) started off a seven-run fourth inning for UMBC with a three-run homer.  Senior Will Delawter (1-3) (Frederick, Md./Catoctin/Chesapeake JC) snagged his first win of the season while allowing only two runs on five hits and striking out three in six innings pitched.

Ryan Holley led the Bearcats, batting in two of their three total runs with a double, while Gio Yanuzzi (0-4) suffered the loss after giving up eight runs, seven earned, on seven hits in 3.2 innings of work.

The Bearcats built a 2-0 lead over the Retrievers in game one, but RBI doubles by both Nolan and Fowler knotted the score at two apiece in the top of the third.

Binghamton’s bats came alive in the fourth and fifth innings, however, as they tallied five runs each, thanks in part to a two-home run inning in the fifth as they took a 12-2 advantage over UMBC.  The Bearcats added the final run in the sixth on the way to the 13-2 victory.

Game two saw the opposite game played out as the Retrievers gained a 2-0 advantage after a two-RBI double by Retz  in the top of the first.

Russo sparked a seven-run fourth with a three-run shot to right center and junior Tom Meaney (Holbrook, N.Y./Sachem), Delawter and junior Scott Peddicord (Columbia, Md./Long Reach) each added more runs for the Retrievers as Meaney and Delawter both tallied RBI singles and Peddicord registered a two-RBI single as the Retrievers built a 9-0 lead.

The Bearcats chipped away at the lead, adding two runs each in the sixth and seventh, but came up short as the Retrievers cruised to the 9-4 victory.

The teams will play the four-game series finale on Sunday at NYSEG Stadium at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday.
