UMBC Baseball Falls in 10 Innings, 9-8 to Binghamton

4/11/2008

  • Box Score

Junior Scott Peddicord recorded his fourth home run of the year on Friday at Binghamton.

VESTAL, N.Y.—Senior Joe Fowler (Wilmington, Del./St. Mark’s) added one double on Friday to come within one double of tying the career school record as the UMBC baseball team fell to Binghamton, 9-8, in a 10-inning contest at Binghamton.  The Retrievers (9-17, 1-4 America East) held a three-run lead going into the bottom of the ninth, but the Bearcats (8-19, 1-4 America East) tallied three runs to send the game to extra innings before bringing in the winning run on a Retriever error.

Junior Tom Meaney (Holbrook, N.Y./Sachem) led the Retrievers, going 2-for-3 with one run scored, two runs batted in and a sac fly, while junior Scott Peddicord (Columbia, Md./Long Reach) tallied the only home run of the game with a two-run shot in the third.  Junior Ryan Morse (1-1) (Frederick, Md./Catoctin/Chesapeake JC) suffered the hard luck loss as he gave up the winning run, unearned, in the 10th after giving up just two hits in 1.1 innings of work.

Peter Bregartner led the Bearcats, going 4-for-5 on the day with two runs scored, while Greg Lane (2-2) picked up the win after pitching a one-hit, scoreless inning in relief.

The Retrievers broke a two-inning scoreless tie in the top of the third with Peddicord’s two-run homer and an RBI single by Meaney to take a 3-0 lead, before the Bearcats added four runs on four hits in the bottom of the inning to take a 4-3 advantage.

The Retrievers would hold Binghamton scoreless for the next two innings while tallying three more runs of their own in the fifth thanks to Meaney’s sac fly and a two-RBI double by junior Shawn Retz (Baltimore, Md./Western Tech/Catonsville C.C.) to take a 6-4 advantage.

The Bearcats cut that lead to one in the bottom of the sixth, but Retz brought in another run with a groundout to third base and senior Steve Russo (Lancaster, Pa./Conestoga Valley) notched an RBI double as the Retrievers increased their lead to three runs, 8-5.

The lead wasn’t enough, however, as UMBC’s pitchers faced a combined eight batters in the bottom of the ninth and gave up three runs on four hits to send the match to extra innings.

The Retriever bats fell nearly silent in the top of the 10th as Lane faced four batters and gave up just one hit, but a Retriever error and Binghamton hit in the bottom of the inning secured the extra-inning win for the Bearcats, 9-8.

Both teams will continue a four-game series on Saturday with a doubleheader scheduled for 12:00 p.m. and the season finale which will be played at NYSEG Stadium and aired on Time Warner Cable Sports on Sunday at 2:00 p.m.
