ARLINGTON, The Retrievers snapped a four-game losing skid to improve to 7-13, while the Colonials (14-11) suffered only their second loss in the last seven games. Peddicord led UMBC as he went 3-for-6 on the day with three runs scored, five batted in, and the only two homers of the game, while freshman Sterling Sams (1-0) (Vienna, Va./James Madison) earned the win after pitching one scoreless and hitless inning in relief while striking out one. Freshman Travis Pearson ( Will Cooper led GW as he went 1-for-3 on the day with one run scored, one batted in, and a sacrifice bunt, while Ryan LaPointe (2-2) suffered the loss after giving up nine runs on 11 hits and walking two in 5.1 innings pitched. The Colonials held a 4-0 lead over the Retrievers going into the fourth, but would be held hitless for the remainder of the contest, as the Retrievers gradually chipped away at the lead. Senior Joe Fowler ( Retz reached base on a fielder’s choice, which caught Meaney at second base, but scored Fowler as the Retrievers looked at a two-out situation with two runners on base. Before the Colonials could get out of the inning however, senior Mark Lemon ( That lead wouldn’t last long as Sams faced just four batters in the bottom of the inning and the Retrievers added four runs in the top of the fifth to take the lead for good thanks to an RBI single by Fowler, RBI’s by Meaney and Retz on fielders’ choices, and an RBI single by Conlon which put them up 6-4. Peddicord tallied his first homer of the afternoon with a two-run shot to right in the sixth and Lemon added another score for the Retrievers with a sacrifice fly as they extended their lead to five, 9-4.
