UMBC Baseball Gives Up 5-1 Lead, Edged By Maryland, 6-5

3/26/2008

  • Box Score

Senior Will Delawter scored two runs in the loss to Maryland on Wednesday night.

COLLEGE PARK, Md.—The UMBC baseball team held a 5-1 advantage over Maryland after the fourth inning, but was held scoreless for the rest of the game and gave up five runs, including a three-run seventh as it fell, 6-5, on Wednesday night at Shipley Field.

Senior Sean Rae (Westminster, Md./Calvert Hall/Frostburg) exited the game with the Retrievers (6-10) up, 5-3, after he allowed three runs on eight hits, while striking out three in six innings, but the Terps (13-11) rallied in the bottom of the seventh and scored three runs on the way to the 6-5 victory.

Junior Shawn Retz (Baltimore, Md./Western Tech/Catonsville C.C.) led the Retrievers, going 3-for-4 on the night with two RBI and freshman Dave Divita (Mayfield Village, Ohio/Mayfield) was tabbed with the loss after giving up three runs on one hit in one-third of an inning.

Bill Rice tallied the game-winning, bases-clearing double for the Terps in the seventh as a pinch-hitter and saw just one at-bat in the game, while Kevin Biringer (2-1) earned the win after pitching four innings in relief and letting in just one run on four hits while fanning four.

The Terps got on the board first thanks to an RBI single by Nick Jowers, but the Retrievers quickly took control as they evened the score in the top of the second with an RBI single by Retz and then built a three-run lead after the third.

Junior Tom Meaney (Holbrook, N.Y./Sachem) started the scoring off for the Retrievers as he tallied an RBI thanks to a Terrapin error with the bases loaded, junior Scott Peddicord (Columbia, Md./Long Reach) added another run with a sacrifice fly and yet another Terp error and a single by Retz brought in the third Retriever score of the inning as they took a 4-1 lead.

An RBI double by senior Joe Fowler (Wilmington, Del./St. Mark’s) in the third made it a four-run lead, but the Terps added one run each in the fifth and six innings and three in the seventh as they edged the Retrievers, 6-5.

Maryland held a 10-9 advantage on hits, but the Retrievers committed just one error to the Terps’ two.

The Retrievers return to action this weekend when they host Longwood in a three-game series beginning with a 6:00 p.m. contest on Friday night.
